As tempting as it can be to buy whatever is on special/whatever is popular at the time, there's actually one key ingredient that frizzers (aka you & I) need to avoid in their chosen shampoo & conditioner: sodium lauryl sulfate. This is a popular cleansing agent used in hair products, & while it is effective at cleansing your hair, it can leave it dry & frizzy. Thankfully these days there are a plethora of sulfate-free products available; my fave is the Giovanni Smooth As Silk range- & it smells divine!
Find an affordable deep conditioner & incorporate it into your weekly routine
I can't stress the importance of this enough- a hydrating deep conditioning treatment is essential for smooth locks, & unless you have very very very fine hair, you should use it every time you wash your hair. Use your preferred treatment (I likeHask Macadamia Oil because it really works, & doesn't require me to take out a mortgage) after shampooing, and leave it on for an absolute minimum of 5 minutes before rinsing it out thoroughly. If you can, apply it after shampooing, then pop out of the shower for half an hour or so to REALLY let it penetrate your hair. Watch an ep of The Bachelor or Real Housewives to fill in the time when waiting, or call your mum, or go on MUO because why not? ;)
I never thought the day would come that I'd prefer something else over my hair straighteners- but it HAS. In store at Farmers now, theDafni Hair Straightening Ceramic Brush is frickin amazing, and I love it so very much that I have to force myself not to use it every day. Although given that it has a hair-safe temperature of 185C, I actually could if I wanted to. My other favourite thing about Dafni? It's SO user friendly (I have tried all manner of styling devices and ended up in tears of frustration because I just could NOT get the hang of it)....and it is so fast! I don't need to clip and section my hair at all, seriously, you just plug it in, wait about a minute for it to heat up, and then brush your hair. I will say that the slower you brush the better- give the ceramic surface time to work its magic- & you'll have perfect hair in minutes. And it lasts all day- happiness! Bye bye frizz, you don't live here anymore!!!!
Cut down on your number of washes per week
Don't yell at me! I'm not saying that you have to walk around with dirty hair, but you definitely shouldn't be washing your hair every day in the hope that it will help with frizz. The reason? If you wash your hair every day, you're stripping it completely of all the natural oil it produces, and this oil can help greatly when your aim is smooooooothness. I personally find that my hair looks far better after a day or so old wash as opposed to freshly washed hair...otherwise it is just SO BOOFY. So hold your horses, and find yourself a reliable dry shampoo to use between washes. My favourite affordable brand is Batiste, because it comes in numerous scents & sizes- & now has options for brunettes- THANK YOU BATISTE!!!!!
I know that it's a total given to be armed with a silicone-based serum if you're a frizzer like me- but not all serums are created equally, so you need to make sure you're using the one that is most effective. If you have fine or thin hair, look for light versions, as you don't want to weigh down your hair toooo much. People with thick, coarse or curly hair can go nuts with the big guns- argan oil can work wonders. Check the ingredients on the back of the products always, & try to avoid formulations that list a high content of alcohol. Why? Alcohol can dry out your hair, leaving it coarse/dry/unmanageable. It's actually quite hard to find styling products that DON'T contain it- but do your best. The Argania Liquid Gold Hair Oil is fantastic, as it contains NO alcohol at all (or sulfates, or parabens), & it makes your hair smell delish!
Don't forget to add some shine!
An often over-looked step, a great shine spray can actually be one of your best weapons your your anti-frizz arsenal. They can tame flyaways (my pet peeve), minimise ridiculously annoying static, & some contain properties that can benefit your hair in the long term. My personal faves right now (I'm constantly falling in love with new ones) are the John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist (because of the high shine finish, AND the fact that it contains a UV filter, which is awesome for summer) and the Giovanni LA Hold Hair Spritz (because of the awesome hold it creates- but use it sparingly, this guy is strong).
So there you go my loves- 6 tips that are guaranteed to have your hair looking sleek and gorgeous- through ALL seasons. Although perhaps by the time winter rolls around, consider investing in a good umbrella, because unfortunately rain just wrecks EVERYTHING you've worked so hard to achieve. Frown face.
