The key to being a leader is knowing when to delegate, so I was more excited than a premenstrual woman getting a free packet of Tim Tams when Queen Kirsty needed representatives to attend the Benefit Brow event in her place. BECAUSE BROWS.
We rocked up to the Late Night Diner in Ponsonby and were greeted by the amazing Benefit team, with incredible Benefit products strewn enticingly over all the tables. As an uncharacteristic display of willpower, I didn’t steal any of them. Snaps for Amelia. After we had downed a glass or five of champagne we were introduced to Benefit’s Global Brow Expert Jared Bailey, who is more magical than sparkle unicorns. Ashleigh aptly nicknamed him the Browfessor and he gave us some great background info on the brand before educating us on their brow philosophy, which I am going to attempt to pass on to you beauties.
Basically, traditional grooming has the client on his/her back while the technician gets all up in their hairy bits (yes, I’m still talking about brows). The babes at Benefit Brow Bar prefer the client to be sitting while they perfect your arches, because they get a better idea of what will work with the client’s facial structure. This results in a more natural looking brow, with the majority of hairs being removed from underneath instead of from the top. They also use their unique Brow Mapping technique to determine the most ideal shape for your face, taking each of your key features into account. Got it? Good!
Jared opened the floor to a question and answer session and, after hearing about how great their brow services were, I wanted to know the best product for concealing stray hairs while I grow my brows out to be professionally groomed. This is a slightly terrifying prospect, because I am anticipating looking like the offspring of Frida Kahlo and Eugene Levy in the interim, but YOLO. Now, Jared DID have a suggestion for covering up the offending hairs but I can’t quiiiiiiite remember what it was, due to being too tipsy/too fangirl/too moron. I’ve failed you all! I scoured the Benefit website, though, and I think it was the Fake Up concealer…whatever it was, it was supposed to cling to my hairs and disguise them, so it sounds pretty badass.
Another question was regarding the right shade for your brows – should you go lighter or darker than your hair colour? Jared suggested going two shades darker for some extra drama and glamour and, since brows are all-important right now, I would totally back him up on this one. Be bold!
After a spectacular drumroll (cue some slightly inebriated girls slapping their hands spastically on the table), we met the woman herself – Browyoncé (Ashleigh also gets credit for this one. She’s a genius). Sarah Taiapa-Bell is the Sales and Education Manager at Benefit NZ and, like Jared; she is super knowledgeable about all things brows! The two of them together are the ultimate Brow Power Couple and I think they need a special name. I’ll leave that to Ashleigh…
Since the event I have been absolutely addicted to Gimme Brow. The tinted formula sets your brows for the whole day and gives them a little boost so they look full and sexy. Depending on what look I’m going for with my makeup, I’ll either use it on its own or in conjunction with other brow products. Go and get your hands on some – you won’t be sorry!
Shaaanxo, Sally Jo and Kris Fox were also in attendance, so head over to their YouTube channels if you want to see some footage of the event (or if you just want to have a perve at the Brow God that’s cool, too).
We arrived at the Benefit to be greeted by the Benefit Pet – this furry gorilla who gives the very best hugs <3
The purpose of this Benefit event was a Beauty and Brows session with Benefit Cosmetic’s Global Brow Expert, Jared Bailey.
The people at Benefit call Jared “The Browfessor” – and MAN is he ever?! Not only does he have the most stunning eyebrows himself (and the most charming, boyishly-handsome face) but he definitely knows his stuff about brows – he touched one of the ladies brows and from a single touch made comments about the density and coarseness of the hair, appropriate shape, and the best products to use – amazing!
There was a real focus around brow contouring (something I’d never thought about before!!), looking at their Gimme Brow, Brow Pencil, and High Brow products to achieve glorious brows. I was fascinated by the Benefit high brow product; a linen pink pencil, used to highlight the brow bone underneath the arch but which could also be used as a highlighter on the cupids bow, or as an eyeliner for the lower waterline. Lucky me, I got to take one away with me!
The organisers did a wonderful job; the food and drinks were delicious (Hello, Chocolate Malt Thickshake!) and I was completely blown away by the Benefit staff who are completely passionate about their brand, their products, and making your face look amazing.
