Since you're reading this, I'm assuming you're an MUO who understands the importance of a long-wearing base. This stands you in good stead to take your face from day to night. For my usual day look (pictured above) I used a combination of timeBalm face primer, timeBalm concealer, & timeBalm foundation for a long-wearing, full coverage base which can easily last all day...& potentially all night (with a few simple tips which I'll mention shortly!). I used Sexy Mama Translucent Powder in strategic places- my nose, chin & forehead, and added a healthy pop of colour on my cheeks using the How 'Bout Them Apples cheek & lip cream palette. I'm loving this palette because all six shades are shades I can 100% see myself using (rare for a palette), and even though they're all cream formulations, they're amazingly long wearing! WIN. Next I reach for the TheBalm Appétit Eyeshadow Palette, and use the matte shadow (Brusce Schetta) over my entire eye area from brow bone to lash line. In my crease, I use a mixture of the other two mattes (Mac Encheese & RaySinbread), and blend blend blend! Then it's time for a quick coat of mascara using Cheater! mascara, & a neutral matte lipstick like Meet Matt(e) Hughes liquid lipstick in Committed. DONE. But now let's take THAT look from day to night!
The first thing you'll need to do is freshen up and sort out your base, because it's unlikely you've time to start all over again. I'm reluctant to tell you to add more foundation, because this could result in cake-face....but if you like cake-face, go nuts! I prefer to use a great facial mist first, (preferably one with hydrating qualities) just spritz it alllll over your existing makeup. This is like a miniature shower for your face, sort of. Then I use the timeBalm Concealer sparingly to add coverage where needed. I tend to rest my chin on my hand when I'm working, so I always, always need to touch up around my jawline. My nose and the top of my cheeks (underneath the eye area) are the other culprits, so whacking concealer on there is a very good idea. Just have a good look at your face (not too close up, because trust me, when I do that I just want to cover EVERYTHING), and conceal where you feel needs work. Finish it off with a light layer of the Sexy Mama Translucent Powder to keep it all in place for the evening, and to help prevent shine. TICK.
Add some sass (and sparkle!) to your eyes
If you started off with a fairly subtle, matte eye look like I did, it's going to be incredibly easy to create a more glam evening eye. I quickly freshen up and deepen the matte shades in my crease, as well as adding the same shades underneath my lower lashes- making sure to really blend it in. I'm a sucker for bright, sparkly shadows- and what better time to wear them than on a girls night out?! I like to dampen my brush first, and pat the shades onto my eyelid- this reduces fall-out, and intensifies the eye shadow by giving it extra colour payoff. I used the shade Tate R. Tots a metallic foil pink from the theBalm Appétit Eyeshadow Palette. Foil shadows are HUGELY on-trend right now, so you're already winning ;) If you have false lashes on-hand, which I never do, add them in now! I don't tend to wear eyeliner during the day, but incorporating one like Schwing® black liquid eyeliner is the fastest way to update your look. If you're confident, wing it out! If you're like me and terrible at eyeliner, just keep a thin line as close to your lashes as possible. To finish, you CAN add another coat of Cheater! mascara- but only if it won't make your lashes too clumpy! I tend to just leave my upper lashes as they are, and apply mascara to my lower lashes instead- something I don't do for day makeup. TICK!
Jump on the contour/highlight train
Now it's time to really bring some drama to your look by adding in some contouring and highlighting (another trend which is still huge)! I first apply the Bahama Mama matte bronzer with a large fluffy brush to the outside of my face, jawline, forehead & cheeks; before going in with a smaller contour brush to add some extra definition underneath my cheekbones. Side note- this product can also be used as an eyeshadow or as a brow powder- HIGH FIVE! Next, I add a little more cream blush from the How 'Bout Them Apples cheek & lip cream palette- it's fine to use a little more than you normally would, because, you know, it's night time. Then it's time to make your skin glow and your cheekbones POP by using the best-seller Mary Loumanizer Highlighter. This product is crazy popular for a reason; the colour payoff is incredible, and it blends like a dream! I use this (with a light hand) on the tops of my cheekbones and just above my top lip/cupid's bow. Get that glow, gurrrrrrl. Oh, and TICK.
We're on the home stretch now, my loves! When it comes to an evening look, I think it should all be about making a statement...and I also think that it needs to be as low maintenance as possible. I like to apply thin layers of product, starting with Staniac Lip & Cheek Stain (this provides the perfect starting base for any lip look- it just doesn't budge! LOVE!). Then I outline and fill in my lips using a neutral lip pencil such as the Pickup Liner in the shade I Really Dig You. To finish off, use a lip brush to apply a deep or bright shade from the How 'Bout Them Apples cheek & lip cream palette. Grab a tissue, blot your lips once, then apply the same lip shade again. You are NEARLY done- TICK!
Listen to Lisa Eldridge
Lisa Eldridge is one of the best makeup artists in the entire world, so it would be crazy not to take some of her tips. I actually only learnt this particular trick last week, and I can't believe what a difference it makes to my finished looks. All you need to do is take a clean, flat-topped kabuki brush, and stare at your completed beautiful face in the mirror. Check to make sure you've blended around your jaw, and make sure you haven't used to much blush/highlighter/bronzer. You can use the clean kabuki brush to gently buff away and blend out any mistakes- SO GOOD. Thank you Lisa Eldridge I love you okay.
