2016 is the time to take a good, hard look at your life and figure out what brings you joy, and what makes you bloody miserable. Once you've sussed out which is which and what is what, you can start by slowly eliminating the things that drain you. Perhaps you have some people in your social circle that you need to slowly edge away from- you can still be a good friend...but you can make a conscious decision not to let them bring you down or hold you back. Instead, spend time with people that make you laugh til you cry, or inspire you, or who love you EXACTLY as you are. When it comes to friendships, quality over quantity wins every time.
Create (& stick to) your boundaries
I'm embarrassed to say that until fairly recently, I still believed that reasonable working hours were from 9-5, & that people shouldn't call you after 9pm. This is utter bollocks, & the sooner you come to grips with that fact the better. People will contact you at ALL hours these days, it's the way of the world. I'm not saying you have to be a slave to your job/friends/family, but you CAN decide when you're able to be available, & when you're able to relax. For example, your boss emails you at 7.05pm, & you're deeply invested in Shortland Street. But you CAN reply at 7.31pm (or 8pm if you're like me & need to dissect the episode with my boyfriend). Make some boundaries- but also remember that things can change from day to day, & flexibility is a must. Write the quote below out on a piece of paper & stick it somewhere you'll see it everyday- it'll help you to remember what you're trying to achieve:
“Balance is not better time management, but better boundary management. Balance means making choices, & enjoying those choices”
Step away (far away) from technology- especially social media
Easier said than done, right? I am RIDICULOUSLY guilty of this, & it obviously doesn't help that my job requires me to be online an awful lot. But you know what? I realised that the world will not stop spinning on its axis if I log out of Facebook for a few hours- it just won't. It won't even stop spinning if I log out for...wait for it...a DAY. Turn off your phone, shut down your laptop, & go spend some time with people you love IRL. Or if you don't want to do that, chill out by yourself in the sun with a book. Or go and have a long bubble bath with some delicious goodies from Lush. Trust me- you'll feel so much better for it.
This might sound a bit boring & obvious, but seriously- it's something that many of us put on the backburner because we're too busy stressing out about other things. Whether you think you need 8 hours of sleep a night or not- it's certainly great to have. If you think drinking water is yuk, throw some fresh lemon or lime in there to make it easier. Make a doctor's appointment every 3-4 months just for a check up- I like to call it my WOF, or my tune-up. If you're in good health, you'll be ten times more able to deal with the curveballs that life can throw at you- curveballs that throw our lives out of balance.
To sum up all of the above- simplicity is the key to a balanced life
Basically- all you need to do to achieve balance in life is to simplify absolutely everything.
- Simplify your friendships & relationships by choosing to engage with those who you TRULY care about, & not bothering about the people you don't.
- Simplify your work commitments by creating clear boundaries...& by making lists so you know exactly what need to be done- & when it has to be done by.
- Simplify your time spent online from walking away from social media at LEAST once a day- this is especially pertinent if you're involved in an online drama. An online drama only exists when you're right there, online, keeping it going.
- Simplify your health by getting enough good sleep, drinking a tonne of water, & having regular tune ups at your doctor (note- asking strangers online for medical advice is not the same as talking to your GP).
All you need to do to go in the draw to win is leave me a comment below telling me some things that YOU do to live a balanced life- trust me, there can never be too many tips for balance! The winner will be announced on the 24th of February- good luck, my loves!
Thank you so much to Triumph for making this post possible! xxx
