Going out with your girls to the races can be an amazing time, IF you’ve covered all your bases and you’re well-prepared. I’ve teamed up with La Vie Spritzer, a brand new range of lightly carbonated sauvignon blanc spritzers (with the CUTEST packaging you’ve ever seen, by the way) to bring you a complete guide to getting race day ready. Read on to find out how to ensure you’ll have one of the best days of your life, and to make sure you won’t end up like this.
Don’t forget beverages! As a rule, you’re unable to BYO to the races, so if you like, you can enjoy a drink beforehand. Pick up some La Vie Spritzer’s while you’re at the supermarket - this is the perfect tipple to enjoy while you’re all getting ready. It comes in three different varieties; Strawberry & Kaffir Lime, Grapefruit & Lime, Cucumber & Juniper- & with an ABV of 5.9%, it’s a refreshing, deliciously light option. With the feminine, vintage-inspired packaging, It’s also almost as stylish as you are ;)
Footwear? This all depends on where you’ll be sitting, but trust me - if you’ll be walking on grass, leave the stilettos at home. Opt for either a thicker heel, a wedge, or some cute flats. No one wants to be the girl at the end of the day in barefeet, especially not you. NOT okay.
Headwear is optional, but fun to play around with if you want to really get into it. Huge hats can be a bit of a mare (unless you’re entering Fashion In The Field, obviously), so try either a smaller hat - or the ultimate in Race Day fashion, a fascinator. Stores like Forever New have a huge range of these right now, and they can turn an ordinary outfit into the extraordinary.
Finally - a bag! Unfortunately a necessary evil, because you WILL need to take a few essentials, which I’ll discuss shortly. Don’t take your regular handbag/tote - it’ll be too big & cumbersome. I like an envelope-style clutch; it’s big enough to fit the must-haves in, and small enough to tuck under your arm. If you can find one that matches your outfit, you’re winning already, trust me.
When you get there, suss out a meeting place where you can meet your friends if anyone wanders off (this is likely). You don’t want to resort to names being called out over the loud speakers, really.
Race Day can also be a day of excess, but you can minimise that (while still having fun, obviously) by staying hydrated and drinking responsibly. If you see La Vie Spritzer being served, opt for that instead of a glass of bubbles. It doesn’t just taste nicer, it’s more refreshing, AND more light. The Strawberry & Kaffir Lime is my go-to, the perfect balance of crisp & sweet. You will love!
But what about betting?? If you are keen to lose some money, it’s a good idea to understand the basics before placing a bet. If the Race Guide isn’t included in your entry, be sure to find one & examine it carefully. This will also make you look awesome. Have a look at the types of bets below, & mutter them to yourself while you read the Race Guide - this will make you look even more awesome.
Types of bets:
Win - select the horse to finish 1st
Place - select a horse to finish 1st , 2nd , 3rd
Each Way - to win and to place
Quinella - select the 1st and 2nd place getters in a race
Trifecta - select the 1st, 2nd , and 3rd place getters in order in a race
First 4 - select the 1st, 2nd , 3rd , and 4th place getters in order in a race
When you choose your horse, try not to choose based on the one with the funniest name, or the one that looks “sad” or “cute”. I’ve done this before and it didn’t work in my favour. Check what the odds are in the racebook, as well as how the horse has performed in its last 5 races. 1-9 is the place it finished, 0 means it was 10th (or worse), and an X means...scratch, which isn’t the greatest. Now you’re ready to go- place your bets now.
I think I’ve covered everything - and hopefully given you a few ideas about how you can get Race Day ready, and make sure that you have an incredible time...while keeping your dignity intact. Thanks to the awesome team from La Vie Spritzer, I have a $100 gift voucher from Mecca Cosmetica to give away - you’ll be able to stock up on race day beauty essentials- yusss!
To enter, just tell us below which flavour of La Vie Spritzer you’d love to try the most - remember, there’s Strawberry & Kaffir Lime, Grapefruit & Lime, and Cucumber & Juniper to choose from! The winner will be announced on the 25th of November - good luck kittens!
Thank you so much to La Vie Spritzers for sponsoring this post - to read more about the range, check out their Facebook page here, and give them a like! xxx
